Challenge 1:
Summer is all about being outdoors. Whether it’s playing, swimming, or cooking, great parties happen outside in summer.
Along that idea, your first challenge is to create a restaurant that specializes in some sort of outdoor cooking.
Maybe you want a southern BBQ pit that is famous for pulled pork. Maybe you’re catering to the vegetarian/vegan
crowd with grilled tofu and special corn on the cob. Perhaps you’re a little more exotic and want to have a
Hawaiian Luau every night. Me, I like to keep it simple: a nice pool party. Either way, the restaurant you come
up with has a few criteria and considerations to keep in mind:
Each restaurant must include a special cooking area, such as a grill or smoker that will prepare your
unique cuisine.
Your restaurant must be themed to fit the style of food you are serving. This theme will become the
eventual theme for your entire park, so CHOOSE CAREFULLY!
You must include an outdoor seating area, since this is summer, afterall.
Get creative, and have fun!
Challenge 2:
Every good park has an area to entertain the little children. Your second challenge in this Summer Showdown is
to create a heavily themed kiddy area for your park. Remember to keep the theme in mind from the first challenge
as you design this area. Also, look at each requirement for this challenge and try to have a sense of cohesion
amongst each ride. Think of this area as a theme within a theme. Your requirements for this challenge are:
There must be one junior-type coaster (the junior coaster in-game is NOT required) that is heavily themed.
There must be two flat rides that are themed. Remember, this area is for children, so nothing over the top.
You must include a water play area. Maybe you want a splash zone, maybe you want a fountain that children can
play in, or a ‘soak trail.’ The choice is yours, so long as it is unique.
Challenge 3:
A theme park isn’t complete without a thrill-seeker’s coaster, something to draw in the adventurers.
The game is called roller coaster tycoon, after all, so your third challenge is to create a coaster.
However, not any coaster will do:
Your coaster must be tall, with a minimum height of 180 feet.
Your coaster cannot have any inversions. (overbanked turns using the ‘diving loop’ elements are acceptable).
The coaster must have at least one tunnel.
The coaster must interact with the queue at some point.
Challenge 4:
When I think summer, I think of swimming. Some of the best theme parks in the world have water parks attached
to them. These parks are a great way to cool off during the dog-days of summer, and to not include them in a
Summer Showdown competition would be a crime. Therefore, for this challenge, you will be required to create a
pool complex (smaller than a full-fledged theme park). The requirements for the pool complex are:
One wave pool, complete with waves.
Two slides (minimum, more are allowed and encouraged). Speed, family, gentle, body, tube, mat, aquablaster,
all are up for grabs in this challenge.
One of your slides must be heavily themed in accordance to the overall theme of your park.
One stall/shop that sells water park gear, i.e. sunglasses, sun screen, inflatables, etc.
This year, there were many challenges to overcome, creative, communication,
technological, and otherwise. Unfortunately, most teams did not finish. Below you will find what each
team submitted. After viewing this thread, please return to the offical
voting thread at Atari and vote for your favorite 2 parks. <Link
